China's dominant mobile car-ride hailing app Didi Kuaidi is set to launch "Orange Monday" events by offering free rides. A number of celebrities, including Tencent's Ma Huateng, have shown their support.
Didi Kuaidi, which has the largest market share of car-hailing apps in China, has just raised $2 billion in a fundraising round.
On July 13 and 20, Didi Kuaidi will offer free Monday rides in 338 cities. On each Monday, a customer can enjoy a free ride of up to 10 kilometers, which means a discount of 13 to 17 yuan (about $2.10 to $2.70).
"Orange Monday" is supported by a number of celebrities, including chairman of Tencent Ma Huateng, founder of New Oriental Yu Minhong, esteemed investor Xu Xiaoping, popular singer Han Hong, and famous director Jia Zhangke.
With more than 2.6 million registered drivers and over 2 million riders, Didi Kuaidi's free ride service is now available all over China. It accepted up to 600,000 orders in one day during June.
