SHANGHAI, May 21 -- Member countries of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA) expressed support on Wednesday to the orderly and peaceful conclusion of the ongoing developments in hotspot regions including the Middle East and North Africa.
In a joint declaration issued after the fourth CICA summit held in Shanghai, the CICA members called upon all parties concerned to implement all relevant UN resolutions to achieve comprehensive, lasting and just peace and security and stability in the Middle East by resuming negotiations.
The CICA recognizes the significance of regional dialogue and cooperation as means of building trust in Northeast Asia and welcomes the relevant initiatives by regional countries, including the "Ulaanbaatar Dialogue on the Northeast Asian Security" proposed by Mongolia and the "Northeast Asia Peace and Cooperation Initiative" proposed by the Republic of Korea, according to the declaration, a major outcome of the two-day summit.
"We believe that the peace and reconciliation process in Afghanistan should be Afghan-owned and Afghan-led," read the declaration, which also calls upon the Afghan armed opposition groups to renounce violence, sever ties with Al-Qaida and other terrorist organizations and respect the Constitution of Afghanistan.
The CICA remains committed to supporting Afghanistan and working with the rest of the international community to contribute to Afghanitan's and the region's security, stability, economic growth and development.
In addition, the declaration expressed concern over the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan, noting that the CICA supports peaceful resolution of this conflict on the basis of principles and norms of international law and the decisions and documents adopted in this framework.
