FORTALEZA, Brazil, July 14 -- Chinese President Xi Jinping and his U.S. counterpart, Barack Obama, agreed on Monday that the just-concluded strategic and economic dialogue between their countries has yielded positive results.

Speaking to Obama via phone here, Xi said, the sixth round of China-U.S. Strategic and Economic Dialogue (S&ED) and the fifth round of High-Level Consultation on People-to-People Exchange (CPE), have yielded positive results and injected fresh impetus into China-U.S. relations, thanks to efforts of both sides.

Xi noted that in a written speech addressing the two events, Obama said the United States welcomes a stable, peaceful and prosperous China and pledged to work with China to build a new type of major-country relations.

Xi said he appreciated the remarks.

The Chinese president recalled that he and Obama had agreed to promote the construction of a new type of major-country relations between their countries when meeting in The Hague, the Netherlands in March.

Xi stressed that China has always viewed and handled its relations with the United States from a strategic height and with a long-term perspective.

He called on China and the United States to guarantee the positive development of their ties, by promoting the negotiations on a bilateral investment agreement, strengthening coordination and cooperation on major international and regional affairs and settling their differences in a constructive manner based on mutual respect.

Obama said the success of U.S.-China dialogue and consultation testified to the devotion of both sides to building a positive, safe and prosperous future.

He reiterated that the United States is committed to building a new type of major-country relations together with China and developing a relationship defined by increased practical cooperation and constructive management of differences.

The U.S. president urged the two countries to further cooperation in such fields as economy and trade, energy and climate change, as well as on hotspot issues.

Obama said he is looking forward to travelling to China in November for the informal leaders' meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) and meeting with Xi.

Besides, the two presidents exchanged views on the Iranian nuclear issue.

Xi pointed out that the negotiation on Iran's nuclear issue has achieved progress but is also faced with a lot of difficulties, calling on relevant parties to make all-out efforts to secure a comprehensive agreement at an early date.

Obama appreciated the important and constructive role played by China and pledged to maintain communication and cooperation with the country.

The two leaders also exchanged views on the situation on the Korean Peninsula.
