BEIJING, July 21 -- Typhoon Matmo is approaching Taiwan and is expected to land in the island on Tuesday night, according to a National Meteorological Center forecast on Monday.

Matmo is moving northwest toward Taiwan at a speed of 20 to 25 kilometers per hour. The typhoon will lash coastal regions of China's mainland after sweeping across Taiwan.

The center issued a blue alert on Monday evening and warned of gales and downpours in these areas.
