MUMBAI, Aug. 4 -- Death toll in last Wednesday's devastating landslide in a village in the western state of Maharashtra has climbed to 109 while some 100 others are still missing, Indian officials said on Monday.
More than five days after a landslide swept away 40 homes in Malin village in Pune's Ambegaon Taluka, the rescue operations are still on.
With the recovery of three more bodies from under the debris, the death toll in the calamity reached 109, even as the National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) operation to locate possible survivors entered the sixth day on Monday amid intermittent showers.
The 109 dead included 44 men, 49 women and 16 children, district administration officials said.
The Geological Survey of India (GSI) has issued advice to rescue teams and district officials to evacuate remaining houses near the landslide site.
"If it continues to rain for another three or four days, there is a possibility of further sliding in the adjacent portions of the landslide that has already taken place," the GSI said in a statement.
Intermittent showers continued to lash the region, hampering movement of heavy machinery deployed by National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) on the marshy land, developed at the site due to rain and mud.
About 50 more people are still believed to be trapped under the rubble but there is dim hope of finding any survivors. Eight injured had earlier been pulled out to safety, officials said.
Though landslides are common in India during the monsoon, environment experts say that this disaster could be man-made as deforestation of jungles on the mountains surrounding the village could have triggered the landslide. Enditem
