BEIJING, Aug. 4 -- Around 11,000 police and firefighters, over 7,000 soldiers and armed police, as well as eight planes have been rushed to southwest China's Yunnan Province hit by a deadly 6.5-magnitude quake Sunday.

More than 4,000 servicemen and paramilitary reserve forces of the Chengdu Military Area Command participated in the rescue work after entering the quake zone.

Another 300 servicemen from the command are on their way to deliver relief materials in 110 vehicles. Over 600 of the command's medical workers are treating the injured.

The command has also dispatched six helicopters to the quake zone.

The first two helicopters to arrive in the area are responsible for examining the disaster situation, transporting the injured and relief materials, and exploring the route and landing venues for air forces.

The other four helicopters also joined rescue forces upon arrival.

The Air Force sent two cargo planes from Beijing and Chengdu to transport relief personnel and materials to the quake zone on Monday morning.

Liu Jun, spokesman of the Chinese Armed Police Force, said 2,860 armed police have been rushed to the quake zone.

They include a relief team with geological experts and more than 20 sets of advanced emergency rescue devices, including drones, a mudslide early-warning and monitoring system, and life detectors, according to Liu.

A relief team composed of 100 servicemen from the Beijing Military Area Command left for the quake zone on Monday morning, according to the PLA General Staff Headquarters.

The team's commander, Fu Xiaoguang, said they are equipped with 8 search dogs and 160 sets of life detectors, and 90 percent of the team members have quake rescue experience.

Additionally, the local public security authority in Yunnan Province has mobilized about 11,000 people to the quake area, including 937 firefighters and 141 fire trucks with 17 search dogs.

As of 11 a.m. Monday, police had relocated more than 4,000 residents and rescued 107 people, while firefighters had rescued 66 residents from debris, with 30 of them still alive, figures from the Ministry of Public Security showed.

The quake occurred at 4:30 p.m. Sunday (Beijing Time) with a depth of 12 km. The epicenter was at Longtoushan Township, 23 km southwest of the county seat of Ludian.

At least 398 people were dead with three missing as of 2 p.m. Monday, rescuers said.
