SINGAPORE, Aug. 7 -- The Singapore Red Cross (SRC) said on Thursday that it has committed 50,000 U.S. dollars in humanitarian aid for survivors of the Yunnan Earthquake.
The contribution supports the purchase and distribution of immediate relief supplies such as tents, family essential packs, amenity bags, food, water and medicine, which will be delivered by the Red Cross Society of China (RCSC), it added.
"Rescue and relief efforts have been challenged by bouts of heavy rain and landslides in the past few days", Benjamin William, Secretary General and CEO of the Singapore Red Cross said. " Thousands of people remain vulnerable and we are working with RCSC to reach out to them as soon as possible."
More than 100 Red Cross relief workers are working onsite to render rescue services and provide relief distribution to the affected community, SRC said. The 6.5-magnitude earthquake has so far caused at least 589 deaths and affected more than 1.08 million people.
