PYONGYANG, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- The Korean People's Army (KPA) of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) on Friday warned South Korean military never to forget the bombardment of Yeonpyeong Island in 2010, the official KCNA news agency reported.

"The South Korean military warmongers are getting evermore pronounced in confrontation and provocation moves against the DPRK though four years have passed after the Yonphyong (Yeonpyeong) Island shelling," said a report issued by the southwestern front command of the military.

The South Korean military plans to wrap up the Hoguk military exercise with live shelling drills on Paekryong and Yeonpyeong Islands and to hold commemorative events on Nov. 23 such as a memorial service and an awarding ceremony for soldiers who lost their lives in the 2010 shelling incident, according to the report.

The KPA officers and troops on the southwestern front are watching with high vigilance the South Korean military's moves in hotspot waters, the report warned.

Two South Korean marines and two civilians were killed in the 2010 artillery bombardment of the Yeonpyeong Island located near the tense western maritime border between the two Koreas.

The DPRK said the shelling was a self-defense measure against joint naval exercises between South Korea and the United States near the sea border called the Northern Limit Line (NLL), the scene of deadly naval skirmishes.

South Korea's Hoguk military drills this year, running on Nov. 10-21, are the largest ever, involving 330,000 troops.

The DPRK has condemned them, saying they were launched despite Pyongyang's effort to improve north-south relations.
