China and Thailand have just signed two MoUs on railway cooperation and agricultural trade. It was China's rich experience in the construction of high-speed railways that finally helped to ink the railway deals between China and Thailand.
This represents a positive start to beneficial cooperation on agricultural produce trade and railway. China has broken the technology monopoly on high-speed rail held by western countries and now boasts a full set of competences in high-speed railroad technology including such elements as railroad construction, equipment design and manufacturing, vehicle operations and maintenance, system integration, and rail control networks. This cooperation agreement on high-speed railroad, the fruit of China's development of railway technology, shows that China's high-speed railway industry has started to go global. Moreover, railway cooperation between these two countries will encourage further regional exchanges and cooperation in railway technology.
High-speed railway has become one of China's flagship exports. The Going Global Strategy of Chinese railway enterprises will play a leading role in promoting exports of China's hi-tech industry and the development of high-tech businesses. This strategy will also help China's enterprises move from a of low-tech production model to a hi-tech one.
Thailand is China's good neighbor. Developing Thailand into a transportation hub of Southeast Asia is one of the priorities in her efforts to change Thailand into a hub of Southeast Asia. Meter gauge railway has been used in Thailand for the past 100 years as Thailand has no dual-track rail lines. The development of Thailand's railway industry has been crippled by many problems. Now Thailand has Chinese support to build a high-speed railw network which will be a blessing for Thailand's economy and people.
Despite a late start, China has achieved rapid development in the construction of high-speed railways, and over the past few years has worked hard to market its cutting-edge railway technology in the developing world.China-built trains and rails are heading for Africa as well as Thailand. There may yet be further momentum in years to come.
