WELLINGTON, Jan. 15 -- China's icebreaker and polar research vessel Xue Long will make a resupply visit to New Zealand 's second city of Christchurch on Friday, said local officials.
Mayor Lianne Dalziel said Xue Long's visit is significant for Christchurch.
"As one of only five gateway cities to Antarctica in the world, Christchurch has become a logistics hub for national and international programs and therefore our international relationships and strong historic connection with Antarctica is a top priority for Christchurch," Dalziel said in a statement.
The Xue Long, Snow Dragon in English, would dock in the Kiwi city for three days for refueling and cargo transfer after traveling through the Southern Ocean from Antarctica's Ross Sea region.
