ACCRA, Feb.17 -- The Chinese government has donated 17 buses worth 10 million yuan (1.599 million U.S. dollars) to the government of Ghana, Chinese Ambassador to Ghana Sun Baohong said Tuesday.

Sun attended a short ceremony of the donation, along with Ghana's Minister of Transport, Dzifa Attivor.

The ambassador said she hopes the donation will contribute to the improvement of Ghana's public transport.

She said China was committed to providing assistance to Ghana's economic development and social progress within its capacity.

"Each generation has their own mission and it is our generation's responsibility to further promote China-Ghana traditional friendship and inject new vigor," she said.

Attivor thanked the Chinese government for the donation and gave the assurance that the buses would be put into good use.

This year marks the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Ghana.

Over the past 55 years, the two countries have carried out fruitful cooperation in various areas.

Last year, bilateral trade between China and Ghana reached 5. 587 billion U.S. dollars, while Ghana's export to China surpassed 1.46 billion dollars, hitting a historical new high.
