The mainland will fully guarantee the quality of drinking water supplied to Hong Kong from Shenzhen, Vice Minister of Water Resources Jiao Yong said at a press conference of the State Council Information Office.
Jiao said the mainland can also provide more drinking water if Hong Kong needs it.
About 800 million cubic meters of water are transported to Hong Kong annually through the Dongjiang-Shenzhen water supply project to alleviate shortages in the region.
Jiao said he hopes that Hong Kong will also conserve water resources by following the water-saving policy adopted by the Chinese mainland.
"It is within our capability to provide sufficient water to Hong Kong if they need more water resources," Jiao said.
