BEIJING, April 28 -- China urged better worker protection, more high-quality workers and stronger labor unions during an award ceremony on Tuesday.
Altogether 2,968 nationwide model workers were awarded at the ceremony, which was held ahead of Worker's Day on May 1. The event was attended by President Xi Jinping, Premier Li Keqiang and other senior leaders.
Xi praised the award recipients and encouraged the entire country to respect all workers and their contribution.
He stressed the dominant role of workers as "history makers" and "fundamental forces" in China's political and economic development.
Workers' interests shall be further guaranteed and the country's development shall benefit more common workers, so as to motivate and encourage enthusiasm and creativity, Xi said.
A high-quality labor force with more knowledge and advanced skills will be a pillar in the country's long-term strategy for sustainable development, the president said.
Xi also highlighted the importance of labor unions, demanding stronger labor unions to better connect common workers and the Communist Party of China.
Premier Li called for stimulating social innovation and market vitality, saying that respecting workers and promoting entrepreneurship will help realize China's medium-high economic growth speed.
