BEIJING, April 29 -- The Chinese mainland and Taiwan should uphold the 1992 Consensus and oppose "Taiwan independence" to consolidate their peaceful relations, a mainland official said on Wednesday, following events marking the 10th anniversary of a landmark cross-Strait communique.

People from across the Strait should cooperate to maintain peaceful development, said Ma Xiaoguang, spokesperson with the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office at a regular press conference.

"The 1992 Consensus has facilitated breakthroughs in cross-Strait ties since 2008," Ma said. "Based on the consensus, people's rights and welfare across the Strait will be safeguarded and improved, and communication will be deepened."

Last week, the Communist Party of China (CPC) on the mainland and the Kuomintang (KMT) party in Taiwan held events in the eastern mainland city of Nanjing to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the publication of a communique in which the two parties described their "shared vision for the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations".

It was the outcome of a meeting between Hu Jintao, then general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, and Lien Chan, then KMT chairman, in 2005. This was the first meeting between leaders of the two parties in 60 years.

"As long as we stick to the common political basis, people from both sides will benefit more," Ma said.

Ma also said the CPC and the KMT are busy preparing for KMT Chairman Eric Chu's visit to Beijing next month.

"The two sides will exchange views to promote CPC-KMT and cross-Strait relations," said Ma, in response to a question on the visit.

Chu will lead a delegation to visit Beijing after taking part in the Cross-Strait Economic, Trade and Culture Forum, scheduled to be held on May 3 in Shanghai.
