BEIJING, May 12 -- A UN investigation into the human rights record of the United States shows that no country is perfect, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hua Chunying said on Tuesday.
"The Universal Periodic Review that the UN Human Rights Council conducted over the United States' human rights record on May 11 proved, once again, that no country is perfect in its human rights record," Hua said at a regular press briefing.
The United States is the subject of a review by the UN Human Rights Council, Geneva. The U.S. delegation faced criticism and questions from more than 100 country representatives at the half-day review on Monday. Concerns were expressed over numerous problems, including excess use of force by law enforcement agents, racial, religious and sex discrimination, torture, and the Guantanamo Bay detention center.
"The Chinese side hopes that any country undergoing review will be modest enough to listen to the advice of various countries, work hard to resolve its own human rights problems and improve its human rights status," Hua told the press conference.
She said China will continue to work with all other countries to push for a just and objective operation of the Universal Periodic Review under the UN Human Rights Council.
