BEIJING, July 2 -- Top Chinese legislator Zhang Dejiangmet with Martin Chungong, secretary general of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), in Beijing on Thursday.
Zhang, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, the country's top legislature, said the IPU, the world's largest parliamentary organization, is an important platform for parliaments to carry out multilateral cooperation.
China, which plays an active part in IPU events and has helped enhance the IPU's influence, appreciates Chungong's role in promoting exchanges and cooperation between the IPU and China, Zhang said.
As the fourth international parliamentary heads' meeting is to be held in the UN headquarters from Aug. 31-Sept. 2, Zhang said he expected the the occasion to see delegates jointly tackle global threats and challenges.
China will work with the IPU Secretariat to make the meeting a success, he vowed.
Chungong, a Cameroonian national who assumed his post last July, called for stronger collaboration between the IPU and China.
