When addressing the United Nations Sustainable Development Summit 2015 at the UN headquarters in New York on Sept. 26, 2015, Chinese President Xi Jinping won applauses from the audience several times in less than 10 minutes, Wu Hongbo, UN Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, told a People's Daily reporter.

China’s proposal is to the point
President Xi's speech is brief, but the theme is clear and has far-reaching significance. It will play an important role in guiding and promoting the implementation of the post-2015 development agenda, added Wu. He believes the following two reasons can explain why Xi's speech won applauses.
First, it presents China's concept of development. Xi proposed four keywords on China's development: fair, open, comprehensive and innovative, which enunciated China's voice.
Second, it makes important proposals to the international community, which include enhancing national development capacity of the countries in the world, improving the international environment for development, optimizing the development partnership and improving development coordination mechanisms.
China is a model in South-South cooperation
The last part of Xi's speech is most inspiring. He announced a series of measures for the realization of the post-2015 development agenda along with other countries, which made the developing countries very excited. Among them, three measures are particularly welcome: 2 billion U.S. dollars as an initiative fund to support South-South cooperation; strengthening investment and exempting the debt of the outstanding intergovernmental interest-free loans due by the end of 2015 owed by the relevant LDCs (the least developed countries), landlocked developing countries and small island developing countries.
President Xi's speech is resonating
What are the characteristics of Xi's speech? Wu said President Xi gave him an impression of being steady and amiable, and his speech is resonating, which is appreciated by the international community.
After the speech, Xi met with the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. "The planned half-hour meeting lasted for 40 minutes," Wu Hongbo said, who was present at the meeting. Ban spoke highly of China's prominent role in the implementation of the Millennium Development Goal. He also believes China will make greater contribution to the implementation of the post-2015 sustainable development agenda.
