The 93rd Food and Drinks Fair closed in Nanjing on Oct. 31, 2015. Nearly 100,000 people from the beverage industry had taken part in the fair. Imported beers became one of the highlights of this fair.
This fair saw many foreign beer brands with prices ranging from 10 yuan a can to 10,000 yuan a bottle. The alcohol content of Chinese beers is around 11 % but that of foreign beers can reach more than 50 %.
Data show that the sales of imported beers reach 360,000 kiloliters from January to August 2015, registering a year-on-year growth of 65.7 percent. Meanwhile, the total sales of Chinese beers amounted to 34.8 million kiloliters, down 6.12 percent from the last year.
Quite a few Chinese dealers begin to sell imported beers in recent two years. One dealer from Dalian told a reporter with Securities Daily that he used to sell imported wine, but the sales did not go well. This dealer added that considering the robust sales of imported beer in China, he has begun to sell foreign beer brands.
There are two reasons behind the rapid growth in the sales of foreign beer brands in China, according to a dealer who has been selling imported beer for years. This dealer explained that there are not any tariffs imposed on the imported beers which taste different from Chinese beers.
