Turkey's state-run news agency said Sunday that Turkey has ended negotiations with China to purchase China’s HQ-9 long-range missile defense system.
The Anadolu Agency, citing unnamed officials, said that Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu decided to abandon the deal over the possibility that Turkey is to build its own "national" defense system.
In September 2013, Turkey's Under secretariat for the Defense Industry, chose China over Western competitors, including the Italian-French Eurosam's SAMP/T Aster 30 system, for Turkey's missile contract. The two countries have been conducting contract negotiations over the past two years.
U.S. and NATO have since raised objection against this move, saying the missile system might not be compatible with those of the NATO members'.
