Beijing hopes that the percentage of adult smokers will dip below 20 percent by 2020 after five-years of efforts on smoking controls.
The Beijing municipal government will build a management platform for smoking controls with a focus on the implementation of policies related to smoking controls, according to the Guiding Suggestions on Strengthening Policies on Public Health Work released recently.
The ratio of adult smokers aged from 18 to 79 is 28.6 percent, down 7 percent from 2011, according to a 2014 survey on the chronic diseases and health risk factors for Beijingers. The figures show that more and more Beijing residents haven quit smoking, but the smoking rate among the adults in Beijing still remains high.
Experts hold that the number of people with illness will increase rapidly if no efforts are made to keep the risky factors under control, posing heavier burdens to social and economic development. The Beijing municipal government has an important task to guide the citizens live a healthy lifestyle and decrease the risk factors for chronic diseases in the years to come.
The Beijing municipal government will build a system on public health service and encourage the citizens to do more physical activity, and more parks themed with health care and community fitness clubs will be built in the city.
