The Myeong-dong Shinsegae Duty-Free Shop will open on May 18 in Seoul, South Korea. With a total area of 15,138 square meters, it will be the biggest duty-free shop in Seoul. All of the shop's 1,500 employees will be able to speak Chinese.
A reporter from China Youth Daily noted that the target customers of this shop are mainly Chinese tourists. According to statistics from South Korea's Ministry of Law, a total of 6.15 million Chinese people visited South Korea in 2015, accounting for 46.1 percent of total foreign visitors to South Korea.
To cater to the shopping habits of Chinese people, the Myeong-dong Shinsegae Duty-Free Shop has made itself a one-stop recreation center. A Kungfu Panda theme park is stationed on the top floor; on the 10th floor, Belgian artist Carsten Holloer’s work "Carousel" is on display; and on the 6th floor, there is a sculpture park featuring the works of world-renowned artists such as Alexander Calder and Henry Moore.
The shop has advertised on Sina, Youku, WeChat, Weibo and other Chinese media sites to increase its visibility in China. The Shinsegae Company also set up a Chinese website to provide online service to Chinese customers.
