The story that a mother from Nanjing, the capital city of eastern China's Jiangsu province, stole a chicken drumstick at a supermarket for her sick daughter on Children's Day, which falls on Wednesday this year, and later was caught by police has touched people's heart. It was called the saddest gift for Children's Day.
Liu, from eastern China's Shandong province, has twin daughters suffering kidney problems, which leads to financial difficulties for the family. After her husband left home, he never came back again. The three family members live off farming in their home.
Due to the worsening disease, Liu took one of her daughters to Nanjing to see a doctor last Wednesday. The girl received infusion therapy at the hospital during the day and stayed in a two-square-meter rented room with her mother at night.
After being captured due to stealing a chicken leg at a supermarket by police on May 31, Liu was frisked and some other goods including some grains and a children's book were found.
According to the diagnostic medical records, Liu's daughter suffers from nephrotic syndrome, with an acute upper respiratory tract infection. "She has received infusion therapy for several days and the daily medical expenses have totaled to around one to two hundred yuan", said Liu.
It is a heavy burden for the poor family. Before coming to Nanjing to see the doctor, Liu borrowed 3,000 yuan from her relatives.
“I came to the supermarket and just planned to get some corn and soy beans but when I saw the chicken leg and the San Zi Jing [the Three Character Classic, a Chinese classic text for children], I took them. I had only five yuan and the chicken leg alone costs seven yuan,” said Liu with a choked voice. Liu wanted to give the chicken leg and the book to her daughter for Children’s Day. She felt very regretful for what she did.
After getting to know about Liu's story, many kind-hearted people made donations to her and she received more than 300,000 yuan within only two hours. However, Liu has declined further donations.
