China is not seeking military domination, and the country's per capita national military expenditure is far lower than that of other countries such as the U.S, the UK or Japan, according to a senior Chinese military official.
Admiral Sun Jianguo, deputy chief of the Joint Staff Department of China's Central Military Commission, said on Sunday during the 15th Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, the U.S, the UK, and Japan's per capita military expenditure averages between $200,000 and $300,000 US dollars, while China's is only $60,000 US dollars.
In introducing China's military reform, Sun said China is now cutting troops. Sun said the reformed Chinese military will be defense-based and will contribute more to regional and international, peace and security.
The troop-cutting plan was announced by Chinese President Xi Jinping during last year's V-Day military parade in Beijing. Xi said by the end of 2017, China will cut its standing troops by 300,000.
Sun also proposed peace as a key factor in maintaining security in the Asia-Pacific region, and said that the way to guarantee world peace and development is if all countries stick to peaceful development.
The Shangri-La Dialogue (SLD) is an Asia-Pacific inter-governmental security forum, which is attended by defense ministers and military chiefs of 28 Asia-Pacific states.
The forum first began in 2002, and aims to cultivate a sense of community among the defense and security community in the region.
