Lianyungang municipal government announced this morning on its official Weibo that the site selection of the Sino-French nuclear feul cycle project will be temporarily suspended in the city in eastern China.
There have been a number of rumors that the Sino-French project is likely to settle in Lianyungang, a city in the eastern China's Jiangsu province. The city government held a press conference on Aug. 7 to explain that the project is still in its early stages of site selection, so the decision has not yet been finalized.
The nuclear cycle program is the largest Sino-French strategic cooperation, and is enthusiastically supported by both governments. CNNC Nuclear Fuel Reprocessing Company(CNFR), which was founded in 2001, is in charge of the preparatory work including site selection and cooperation negotiations.
Since 2015, CNFR has conducted research in several of China's coastal provinces, including Shandong, Fujian, Jiangsu and Zhejiang. It has also carried out preliminary site selection work in Lianyungang. However, no final decision has been made.
The Lianyungang government promised to disclose any information it receives in a timely fashion and remain open to the public's opinions and suggestions. Meanwhile, those who spread lies and rumors about the project may be punished for disturbing the social order.
