Wang Hao (a pseudonym), a 24-year-old Chongqing resident, was diagnosed with uremia in a local hospital in May. Soon after, he launched a campaign to raise 500,000 RMB to cover his medical expenses. Several photos showing Wang in the hospital, as well as photos of his state-issued ID card, were posted along with the fundraising request. A total of 1,674 people donated 87,226 RMB to help Wang.
However, one donor recently discovered that Wang had spent over 110,000 RMB to purchase a new SUV. Stunned by the news, Zhang felt he had been cheated. He questioned Wang's motivations via social media, prompting Wang to reply that the money for the SUV was borrowed from relatives and had no relation to the donated funds. Zhang continued to express suspicion, only to find himself formally blocked by Wang. Wang also blocked several other netizens who questioned his ethics.
Undeterred, Zhang posted screenshots of his chats with Wang online, questioning whether Wang was even suffering from uremia. The post drew many netizens' attention.
According to the hospital where Wang claimed to be registered, Wang did in fact undergo dialysis treatment over the summer. Wang's mother backed up her son's claims that the vehicle was bought with borrowed money, and that all donations were being used to fund her son's medical treatment. Wang said that his family faces great economic pressure; his disease demands ongoing dialysis treatments, and even the donations cannot cover all his costs. His reason for buying the vehicle was to become a Didi taxi driver to help relieve his family's burden.
Despite the fact that the hospital corroborated Wang's story, the matter has nevertheless caused serious controversy. Some netizens consider Wang's donation drive to be completely legitimate, while others believe Wang's behavior is dishonest.
