Chen Xibang, 73, has created three versions of an artwork featuring 200 talented women from Chinese history. The total length of all the versions put together is around 150 meters.
Chen has loved painting since his childhood. He became interested in figure painting while working as a poster painter in a movie theater for five years. Chen came up with his plan for the piece in 1967, when he began his career in an art gallery.
In winter of that same year, Chen began to execute the plan. In his spare time, Chen went to museums, art galleries and libraries. Referring to various historical documents, Chen began to sketch the women.

Chen's earliest version on tissues
Due to a paper shortage, Chen stuck tissues together and drew on those for his 50-meter earliest version. For the second undertaking, Chen wanted to add hairstyles, clothing and accessories, which he researched in historical records. Chen even traveled to the National Museum and several silk factories in the course of his research.
Chen brought the women to life in his third version. Having lived during periods ranging from the Qin Dynasty to contemporary times, Chen’s subjects include ancient poets Xue Tao and Li Qingzhao, as well as contemporary writer Qiongyao. Beside each woman there is also a relevant poem written in Chinese calligraphy.
Chen completed all three versions as brush paintings. His brush skills have earned him some renown, and he now has over 30 students.
Two years ago, Chen lost sight in his left eye due to cataracts. Fortunately, his final piece is nearly finished. Chen therefore hopes someone can help him to finish his masterpiece.
