Zhang Yao, a 20-year-old female Chinese student at Rome University of Fine Arts, has been missing for more than 48 hours after getting robbed by a gang of refugees on Dec. 5. Local police in Rome have launched a search.
According to the missing person notice shared by many people online, Zhang's bag was stolen while she was on her way back from the immigration office. Friends with whom she was on the phone at the time of the crime said that the call ended very suddenly, preceded by unknown sounds. Zhang hasn't been seen since.
The Chinese embassy in Italy immediately launched consular emergency protection and urged local police to take measures to crack the case as soon as possible. In addition, the embassy reminded Chinese international students to stay vigilant about their personal safety.
So far, police have announced no leads in the case.
