A picture of a female doctor working while connected to an IV recently went viral online, and many netizens praised her highly. In the photo, the IV bag is balanced on the doctor's head.
Li, the woman in the photo, is a pediatrician at Shenyang Woman’s and Children’s Hospital. She is currently five months pregnant. Li came down with non-infectious acute gastroenteritis on the night of Jan. 8, registering a fever of over 39 degrees Celsius. Though she promised her husband she would call in sick, she couldn’t bear to leave all her work to already busy colleagues. Ultimately, she decided to go to work as usual.
As for why she would put the infusion bag on her head, she explained that her colleague was looking for an IV stand for her at the time the photo was taken, but she was too eager to start working work to wait; as a temporary solution, she put the bag on her head.
Li said she loves her job and she hopes the public will show more respect and understanding to pediatricians in the future. Because China removed pediatrics departments from most Chinese hospitals in the 1990s, there is now a shortage of roughly 86,000 pediatricians in China.
