A placenta has been found inside a dead sperm whale’s body after the whale's corpse was dissected in Huizhou, Guangdong province on March 16, China News reported. Experts said it is the first placenta of a sperm whale ever found.
“The baby male sperm whale was 2 meters long, weighing 110.5 kilograms. The discovery is of great significance in the treatment and protection of sperm whales in the future,” said Tong Shenhan, curator of the Biological Museum of Xiamen University, who was involved in the dissection. Tong added that their next step would be to dissect the baby whale, which might take up to a month.
