JD.com, one of the largest online retailers in China, helps alleviate poverty through e-commerce.

A report said over 6,000 shops on the popular online shopping site from 832 counties designated as impoverished achieved a sales volume of 15.3 billion RMB in the past one and a half years.

Last year, JD signed the “Strategic Cooperation Framework Agreement on Precision Poverty Alleviation through Ecommerce” with the State Council’s Office of Poverty Alleviation. Both sides agreed to explore ways to alleviate poverty through production, entrepreneurship, and employment.

More than 100,000 poor households have benefited from JD’s poverty alleviation project, with an average increase in income of 2,000 to 3,000 yuan ($297-$446).

The company launched a pilot project named “running chicken” last year to tighten the connection between bringing chickens from the farm to the table.
