The family of missing Chinese scholar Zhang Yingying submitted a petition to U.S. President Donald Trump recently, and a news conference will be held on Tuesday in Champaign Illinois, to announce the details of the petition, according to ThePaper.cn.
The conference will be used to report the current situation of Zhang’s family and to announce the details of the petition, as well as to report how much has been raised in donations and to call for more support.
A GoFundMe page has been set up by University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign to raise $500,000 for Zhang. About $140,000 has been raised so far.
It has been over 70 days since Zhang disappeared after getting into a black Saturn Astra on Jun. 9, and the driver Brendt Christensen, a former physics student at the university, is accused of kidnapping her. Acting US Attorney Patrick Hansen and FBI Special Agent Sean Cox announced an indictment on Jul. 12, and Christensen pleaded not guilty in a federal court in Urbana, Illinois, two days later. He is scheduled to go to trial on Sept. 12.
