A university in Shenyang, Northeast China's Liaoning Province has notified its students' organizations that they are not allowed to organize any Western religious festivals, such as Christmas, on campus, in a move that is intended to help the younger generation "build cultural confidence."

An online notice, allegedly released by the Communist Youth League of Shenyang Pharmaceutical University on Monday, said that the students' union, student associations, and youth league branches will be banned from holding any activities centered on Western religious holidays.

It went on to say that, in recent years, influenced by Western cultures and promotional activities of some business, some young people are "blindly excited about western holidays," especially Christmas Eve or Christmas Day.

So, the school's Communist Youth League decided to take action against such activities to help its members build cultural confidence in order to "resist the corrosion of Western religious culture."

One employee of the school's Communist Youth League confirmed with the Global Times on Thursday that they had sent out the notice but declined to comment on it.

This is not the first time for a Chinese college to boycott Western holidays. In 2015, Northwest University's Modern College, in Xi'an, Shaanxi Province banned Christmas celebrations on campus and, after being widely criticized, it justified its action as being "utterly correct", especially in view of the fatal stampede that had occurred on New Year's Eve in 2015 in Shanghai.

Back in 2014, some schools in Wenzhou, East China's Zhejiang Province were forbidden from holding any Christmas-related events after the city education authorities announced a blanket ban covering all high schools, middle schools, primary schools and kindergartens.
