Built in 1987, the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is a place for giant panda protection, scientific research, breeding, international cooperation and communication, and other purposes.
At the very beginning, there were only six sick and starved giant pandas inside the base: three males and three females. By the end of October 2017, the panda population has expanded to 184.
Ninety-seven of them live inside the base, 13 are in the wild zoo, 42 live in zoos across the country, and 20 live overseas, including four in the U.S., eight in Japan, two in Canada, four in Spain, and two in France.
The base is home to many scientific research teams, which have made marked achievements in panda breeding, disease prevention and control, and genetic management, helping solving global issues about panda protection.
Besides being a world-famous base for captive panda protection and research, the place also takes the lead in the country in the cultivation of public awareness about panda protection.
