Washington (People’s Daily) – After a week-long public hearing, Dr. Lawrence G. Nassar, the disgraced and former USA gymnastics team doctor, was sentenced to 40 to 175 years in prison on January 24.

Nassar had pleaded guilty to several counts of criminal sexual abuse.

Judge Rosemarie Aquilina said of Nassar’s sentence, "I just signed your death warrant," adding, “You’ve done nothing to deserve to walk outside a prison again.”

During the hearing, over 150 women, including several Olympic champions, spoke publicly to accuse Nassar of sexual abuse and shed light on the horrendous conditions of USA Gymnastics.

"You took advantage of me. You took advantage of all of us," said one of the victims, Brooke Hylek.

Nassar victim Ashley Bremer said, "I certainly will not call you a doctor because a real doctor is a hero, not a wretched paedophile."

Before sentencing, Nassar apologized to the young women in the courtroom, "There are no words to describe the depth and breadth of how sorry I am for what has occurred."

"Sir, I hope that -- sir. I hope you are shaken to your core. Your victims are clearly shaken to the core,” said Judge Aquilina in response to Nassar’s courtroom apology.

USA Gymnastics Board of Directors executive leadership, Chairman Paul Parilla, Vice Chairman Jay Binder, and Treasurer Bitsy Kelley resigned Monday amid public outcry over Nassar’s actions, demanding for a thorough overhaul of the athletic organization.

Many have called for the president of Michigan State University to step down as Nassar had worked there for decades.

Inspired by the “me too” movement, many more victims have come forward.
