BERLIN, Feb. 20 (Xinhua) -- Following a large-scale power outage in Berlin's district Koepenick, about 31,000 households in Berlin were cut off from electricity supply, and schools as well as daycare centers remained closed on Wednesday.

The power outage was caused by construction work which had damaged a cable of a transformer station in Koepenick during drilling operations at a nearby bridge construction site on Tuesday.

In order to resupply the area with electricity, "complicated underground construction and repair work" would be necessary which are scheduled to continue until Wednesday afternoon local time, the energy company Vattenfall announced on Twitter.

Two combined heat and power plants and a hospital in Berlin were also affected by the power outage. "The resupply of the approximately 5,000 affected households with heat can only take place after the resupply with electricity", according to Vattenfall. In addition, mobile communications and the landline telephone network were also partially unavailable.
