It’s not a big deal to make a delicious fondant cake. But have you ever seen a fondant cake made with traditional Chinese elements?

A 29-year-old woman from central China’s Hubei province has won multiple international awards for making cakes with a cultural theme.

Out of her love for cakes, Xu Yang quit her job at a tax bureau years ago and went to the UK to study baking. As a traditional Chinese art enthusiast, she decided to incorporate traditional Chinese culture into her creations.

Xu explained that she had studied classical landscape art and architecture to better present one masterpiece, which last year won gold at Cake International, the world’s largest cake competition, held in the UK.

The award-winning cake had a bridal sedan chair on top, and three Chinese characters in the middle layer meaning “China”, “kindness” and “l(fā)ove”, which together carry best wishes. At the bottom, Xu had added a delicate traditional Chinese-style wedding room.

Xu believes that traditional Chinese culture belongs to China and also the world, and she takes her cakes as a carrier to inherit and spread Chinese culture.

“I would like to introduce China’s traditional culture and long history to the world through my cakes,” she said.
