China’s central bank, the People’s Bank of China, is going to issue a set of gold and silver commemorative coins featuring Pingyao ancient city, a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site in Jinzhong City, north China’s Shanxi Province, on June 5, Chinanews.com reported on June 3.
The set of commemorative coins, with face values ranging from 10 yuan (about $1.45) to 2,000 yuan, will comprise of three coins, including two gold coins and one silver, all of which will be legal tender in China.
The front of each coin will feature the Yingxun Gate Tower in Pingyao, along with the country name and the year of issue, while the reverse side of each coin will display different features.
With a face value of 2,000 yuan and a maximum circulation of 600, the gold coin weighing 150 grams will feature the typical ancient architecture of Pingyao, the Chinese name of the old city, and the face value on its reverse side.

The reverse side of the 8-gram gold coin will feature one of the buildings and the panoramic view from Zhenguo temple in Pingyao, the Chinese name of Zhenguo temple, Pingyao ancient city, and the face value of the coin, which is 100 yuan. Ten thousand of the 8-gram gold coins will be released into circulation.
Twenty thousand silver coins made with 30 grams of pure silver will also be circulated, with a face value of 10 yuan. It will also show a statue of Skanda and part of the buildings in Shuanglin temple of Pingyao and the Chinese names of Pingyao ancient city and Shuanglin temple.

Pingyao ancient city is the birthplace of China’s banking industry, and also the center of the culture of Shanxi merchants. “The Pingyao-themed commemorative coins will praise Pingyao’s past glory, and will also represent an expectation of the prospects of Pingyao,” said an executive of the management committee of Pingyao.
