Since the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, the Chinese government has attached great importance to safeguarding food security. Especially, since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China in 2012, China has promoted the supply-side structural reform of agriculture as the primary line to improve the sector’s comprehensive benefits and competitiveness. China’s grain and rice yields have increased from 48.6 million tons in 1949 to 212.1 million tons in 2018.
