Chinese visitors have put a higher demand on museums as they are becoming hot tourist spots, according to a survey recently conducted by China Youth Daily.
The survey report claimed that 80.9 percent of 2,006 respondents would visit local museums during a tour, believing that museums are windows for them to understand local history and culture.
Data from the State Administration of Cultural Heritage showed that museums around China staged 26,000 exhibitions in 2018, attracting more than 1.1 billion visitors.
However, many respondents held that some museums fail to popularize themselves and open some exhibition areas to the public, adding that excellent exhibitions are mainly only arranged in major cities.
For that, Zheng Yi, curator of Fudan University Museum, called on more museums to offer more excellent exhibitions and education activities to meet people’s ever-growing demands for cultural diversity.
To enhance the museum experience, 64 percent of respondents suggested that museums need to provide more interesting exhibitions and interactive experience for visitors.
58.9 percent of respondents hoped that supporting facilities should be improved, while 55.1 percent of them believed that museums should increase the frequency of special exhibitions.
Zheng said that museums as public cultural institutions should draw themselves closer to visitors, especially young people.
The survey covers respondents of different age groups from a range of places, from first-tier cities to towns, in which those born between 1980 and 1999 account for almost 79.6 percent.
