Karamay Central Hospital in northwest China's Xinjiang Autonomous Region has a database of more than 4,800 medical experts providing telemedicine services thanks to 5G technology.

The hospital cooperates with 150 hospitals at home and abroad, including the Cleveland Clinic in the US and Chinese PLA General Hospital, bringing the best medical resources in China and the world at large to the region.

"It means that we have brought 4,800 medical experts to Xinjiang," said Tuo Kuanqian, deputy head of the hospital, who contributes to the development of telemedicine in Karamay.

In 2016, Karamay Central Hospital took the lead to establish a telemedicine imaging database, effectively improving the efficiency and accuracy of telemedicine.

In 2017, the Sino-US international telemedicine platform went online, promoting the development of international telemedicine in Xinjiang.

All these can be attributed to Karamay's cloud computing capabilities, the most powerful in northwest China.

Patients in remote counties no longer have to travel to big cities for complicated procedures thanks to 5G technology, Tuo added.

On Oct. 16, Tian Wei, an orthopedic expert at Beijing Jishuitan Hospital, successfully conducted a remote orthopedic surgery on a patient more than 3,000 km away by instructing a surgery robot using 5G wireless technology.
