MACAO, Dec. 17 (Xinhua) -- An exhibition series presenting the collections of the Palace Museum in an unprecedented scale was inaugurated Tuesday at the Macao Museum of Art in celebration of the 20th anniversary of Macao's return to the motherland.

The exhibition series, under the theme "The Long Journey: The Forbidden City and Maritime Silk Road," seeks to lead the audience to revisit the magnificence that ensued in the course of Chinese and Western cultural exchanges by displaying cultural gems associated with the Maritime Silk Road.

As the first phase of the exhibition series, an exhibition using state-of-art digital interactive technology to display Chinese painting masterpiece "A Panorama of Rivers and Mountains" was launched Tuesday evening and will last to March 15, 2020.

"A Panorama of Rivers and Mountains 3.0" exhibition illustrates the extraordinary charm of the painting of Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127), the largest piece among extant Chinese blue-green landscape paintings and one of the 10 most famous ancient paintings in China, by means of digital multimedia, interactive experience and spatial displays.

The digital long scroll, with 35 meters in length and six meters in height, is the world's first dynamic digital scroll with multichannel technology and real-time interaction with the audience, and is equipped with the function to change the appearance to represent different seasons and weather, said Vincent Gao, technical director of the exhibition.

Through the combination of traditional artistic techniques and innovative digital technology, it allows the audience to feel the magnificent landscape in the painting, as well as the philosophical sentiments behind, according to Gao.

The exhibition series was co-organized by the Cultural Affairs Bureau of Macao Special Administrative Region government and the Palace Museum in Beijing to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China and the 20th anniversary of Macao's return to the motherland.

At the inauguration ceremony, President of the Cultural Affairs Bureau Mok Ian Ian said since its establishment in 1999, the Macao Museum of Art has been cooperating with the Palace Museum to present a large-scale exhibition of cultural relics to Macao residents every year.

"After two decades' fruitful collaboration, both parties have developed profound friendship to jointly carry out the mission of promoting excellent traditional Chinese culture," she said.
