Tianjin Binhai New Area is a sub-provincial region under the jurisdiction of Tianjin, and a national comprehensive reform pilot area. It is by far the first national reform and innovation zones approved by the State Council. Tianjin Binhai New Area is located in eastern coastal areas of Tianjin, in the center of Bohai economic circle.
With a total area of 2,270 square kilometers and a population of 263 million people, it is the northern gateway to China's opening up, known as the "third pole of economic growth in China."
After 10 years of independent development by Tianjin municipality, Tianjin Binhai New Area began to be included into the "Eleventh Five-Year Plan" in 2005 and is integrated into national development strategies, a national focus on supporting the development and opening of the national district.
Tianjin Binhai New Area’s GDP reached 802.04 billion yuan in 2013; per capita GDP reached 310,000 yuan (about 50,000 U.S. dollars).
The convenient transportation makes the new area more competitive. Binhai New Area has developed a three-dimensional network combining sea, land and air transportations.
It connects with the nationwide railway network through such trunk railways as the Beijing-Shenyang Railway, Beijing-Shanghai Railway, Beijing-Kowloon Railway, Datong-Qinhuangdao Railway and connects nationwide trunk highway network through highways such as Beijing-Tianjin-Tangshan Highway, Jingjin Highway and Tangjin Highway, etc.
