The cooperation association aims at promoting the friendship between Sir Lanka and China, and boosting the communication in the fields of politics, economy and trade, science and technology, culture, and education between the two countries. In the past 17 years, the association had hosted a lot of activities, including the celebration of the 30th anniversary of Reforming and Opening up, and the 90th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China. Moreover, the association also helped China cope with many major natural disasters; for example, it donated for the Wenchuan Earthquake.

As a non-governmental and non-profit organization, the Sri Lanka-China Social and Cultural Cooperation Association has won enormous supports from both China and Sri Lanka. Now there are 4,000 members in the association, and almost all of them are volunteers making contributions to the friendly exchanges between the two countries. Some of them are elites like lawyers, engineers, and professors in Sri Lanka. Abeysekera says: "The ruling parties, private enterprises, and a lot of individuals are all very supportive for our association. Despite their political background and social status, we all share the same dream, which is to enhance the friendship between Sri Lanka and China."
