INCHEON, South Korea, Sept. 22 -- The 39-year-old legendary gymnast Oksana Chusovitina, who has competed in six Olympic Games and ten World Championships, showed up at the Asian Games here on Monday.
This time the veteran represented Uzbekistan where she was born, after competing for Germany for six years since 2006. She took 14.675 points in vault, only after DPR Korean Hong Unjong in subdivision one. "I think it went well," she said when asked about her performance.
"I had a foot injury a few days ago during the podium training and today when I was warming up, I felt my foot was still not ready for all-round. So I decided just to do vault today," she explained. "I hope my foot will recover and compete in all-round at the World Championships."
"It is not hard for me to do training everyday," she said, adding that she never formally announced that she was retired. "I just stepped away, got some rest, then continued training and to see what's going on. So far I'm here."
Chusovitina made her international debut in 1987 for the former Soviet Union, before many of her current rivals were even born. Following the dissolution of the USSR, she represented the Commonwealth of Independent States at the 1992 Olympic Games and later began competing for Uzbekistan.
In 2002 her son Alisher was diagnosed with leukaemia, so her family moved to Germany where he could receive treatment. Chusovitina won a silver medal for Germany at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. She returned to Uzbekistan in 2013.
