MOSCOW, July 13 -- At least 23 people have been killed and 22 others injured after a building collapsed Sunday in an airborne training center in Russia's Siberian city of Omsk, local media reported Monday.
"As of 10:00 a.m. Moscow time (0700 GMT), all 42 servicemen (trapped in the building) have been removed from the rubble. And 23 of them are dead and 19 servicemen are receiving medical treatment," Interfax news agency quoted Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov as saying.
Another three soldiers who had escaped the accident were slightly injured.
Rescue efforts have ended, Konashenkov said, adding that 10 injured servicemen were flying to Moscow for necessary treatment.
A section of a four-story barracks in the training center of Russian Airborne Forces collapsed Sunday at 19:52 Moscow time (1652 GMT).
Investigation is underway with violations during repair work suspected to be the probable cause of the accident. A criminal case was also opened on charges of negligence.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov on Monday told reporters that President Vladimir Putinhad ordered Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu to provide the injured with all necessary medical treatment.
Putin also expressed condolences to the relatives and friends of the victims and to the whole armed forces, Peskov said.
