A total of 32 wild elks were trapped in a canal in Yancheng, east China's Jiangsu province, on Oct. 14, 2015. After over 20 hours of rescue efforts by the local police and workers of the wildlife reserve, the elks were out of danger. It was the second time in two months that the elks were trapped, China Youth Online reported.

A lookout Mr. Zhao called the local police on the morning of Oct. 14, "I see many elks trapped in the canal!" 

When the police arrived they found out that a total of 32 wild elks were trapped in a 2.5 meters high and 3.8 meters wide canal. The elks are incapable of escaping the canal on their own. 

After the policemen discussed with the workers of the wildlife reserve they decided to build a bridge for the elks.

In the evening the temporary bridge was completed. Policemen and workers began to drive the elks to the bridge. However, the elks, unaccustomed to strangers, were frightened and ran about the canal. Rescuers had to retreat a little further and wait for the elks to climb the bridge voluntarily at night. At about 2 a.m. the next morning they heard noises made by the elks and saw with delight as they climbed the bridge and escaped. 

At 8 a.m. the last two elks walked to the bridge and all 32 elks were rescued.
