The Kunming South Railway station is under construction in Kunming, capital of southwest China's Yunnan province. It will be the terminal of the high-speed rail linking Kunming and Shanghai. The railway station is expected to be completed and put into operation in the second half of 2016.
Kunming South Railway Station will have 16 platforms and 30 railroad tracks with a total construction area of 334,700 square meters. It will be a major station of the Shanghai-Kunming high-speed rail and Nanning-Kunming high-speed rail.
The Shanghai-Kunming high speed rail runs 2,066 kilometers, with designed speed of 300 kilometers per hour. It started construction in September 2010 and is expected to be put into operation by the end of 2016.
After its completion, a train journey from Kunming to Shanghai will be shortened to 8 hours, instead of 37 hours with the current railway. It will greatly stimulate economic and social development of Yunnan. Yunnan will thus enter into the high-speed rail era in the year.
