China is conducting research works of its space solar power station, according to an NPC deputy.
Space-based solar power (SBSP) is the concept of collecting solar power in space using an SPS, that is, a solar-power satellite or a satellite power system for use on earth.
SBSP has once again begun to attract attention with projects emerging in the U.S., Russia, and Japan.
This system is environmental-friendly and will not rely on resources on the earth, Zhang Bonan, NPC deputy and chief designer of China's spaceflight program at China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, told the Science and Technology Daily.
Space-based solar panels can generate 10 times as much electricity as ground-based panels per unit area, he said.
The idea of space solar power station with multichannel rotary joints proposed by China Aerospace Science & Technology Corporation won the first place in the 2015 International Sunsat Design Competition.
