Built in the 18th century, Peterhof is often described as the Versailles of Russia. It's composed of several palaces, gardens and parks that's been built up over several years.
The first part of the grounds to be created was the lower park, which began under the reign of Peter the Great. This is made up of the formal gardens of Marly and Monplaisir palaces as well as several fountains.
Later, the upper garden was created under his daughter, Empress Elizabeth.
Its most well-known attraction has to be the numerous water fountains, many of which are painted with gold.
Entrance to the Upper Garden is free and the Lower Park with Fountains costs RUB 500 (£5.23).
