In the midst of a downpour, a ponytailed young girl in a blue shirt held an umbrella for a traffic police officer. The scene was photographed, posted and widely reposted by citizens in Yingkou, Liaoning province.
The officer, Zhao Lixin, explained that the incident occurred around 6 p.m. on July 21, only 20 minutes or so after he arrived at his post. It was raining heavily during rush hour, so the road was crowded and vehicles were moving very slowly. Although he was wearing a raincoat, his hat was already quite wet.
“The traffic light changed and I turned around. When I looked up, a girl stood behind me, holding an umbrella. I was astonished. The concrete island in the middle of the street was really only big enough for one person to stand on. For two, it was not sufficient,” Zhao recalled. “I told her to leave because it was dangerous. I had a raincoat, but she still refused to leave. She said my hat was wet and she would hold an umbrella for me.”
Zhao tried several times to persuade the girl to leave the island, but each time she refused. Cong Xiaoyang, Zhao’s colleague, witnessed the exchange. He also came over and tried to persuade the girl to move to a safer place. Meanwhile, after holding the umbrella for more than 10 minutes, the girl was completely soaked.
Zhao was worried about the kind-hearted girl after that day. He thought about whether she might catch a cold, as the weather that day was chilly and the girl was soaked. Zhao also wanted to find the girl to say thank you.
In an effort to help him do just that, Chinese social media is currently full of posts searching for the mysterious, generous girl.
